General Information

PC-DCE/PC-DFS for Windows
Version 5.1

Release Applicability

This version can be installed over any previous version of PC-DCE.

New Features in This Release

This version of PC-DCE includes support for Windows 2003 and also includes the new PC-DFS client.

Problems Fixed in This Release

Administrator Unable to Add Rights for Stopping Servers

The ACL on the CDS object /.:/hosts/<machine name>/config/srvrexec is used to determine who can stop servers running on <machine name> which are under the control of dced, via the dcecp "server stop" command. The host machine's self credentials are necessary for modifying this ACL.

A Windows administrator, using the host machine's self credentials, should be able to issue the dcecp command "acl modify /.:/host/<machine_name>/config/srvrexec -io -add {user <dce account name> rws}" to give whomever logs in with <dce account name> the rights to stop servers on <machine name>. However, the Windows permissions on the self-credentials cache file were not being set properly, so the administrator was unable to issue the command.

Applying PC-DCE 5.1

To upgrade to PC-DCE 5.1:

  1. Download PC-DCE 5.1. (See "Obtaining PC-DCE 5.1" above for download links.)

  2. Unzip the files and then run Setup. You are given the choice to Modify, Repair, or Remove kits. Choose Repair. Your present installation will be updated to the new version.

  3. Reboot the machine. The update does not take effect until the machine has been rebooted.

Note: If you are updating a host running the Security or CDS Server as a replica, it may take a minute or two for the daemons to resynchronize themselves with the master. Initially, the PC-DCE Service Panel may say the daemons are unavailable. After about one minute (or possibly longer for larger cells), click Refresh and the display will show that the servers are running normally.
