What Is an Access Control List Entry?

An ACL entry is the individual row in an ACL and consists of an entry specification and the permissions associated with it. The format for an entry is as follows:

Type (Icon)    User     Cell       permissions

The following example shows an access control list entry:

On the Access Control List display, an icon represents the entry type of the users to which the permissions apply. The ACL Editor supports nine entry types: object owner, user, object owner's group, group, home cell, cell, all other users, unauthenticated mask, and general mask. Note that not all DCE components and applications support all ACL entry types. For example, CDS does not support the object owner entry type.

The Users field in an entry describes a specific user or group of users. The Cell field holds the name of the cell of the user (s), if applicable. The permissions field describes the set of permissions available to the user(s) named in the entry specification.
